4P00001-15 Development of method for determination of moisture absorption characteristics of torrefiesd biomass

The goal of the project is to study the mechanisms of drying, humidification and moisture resistance for heat-treated (torrefied) wood. Another aim is to develop methods to determine the characteristics, and study how different types of treatment can affect the moisture absorption capacity of torrefied materials.
Within the project "Development of method for determining the moisture absorption characteristic of torrefied biomass", stem wood from spruce; raw material and torrefied material with three degrees of torrefaction, been analyzed for sorption properties. The materials equilibrium moisture contents at a specific temperature (60° C) and relative humidity from 0 to 95%, and the kinetics of a adsorptionsförlopp from 0 to 95% RH has been determined. The equilibrium moisture content of the hardest torrefied material was half as high as for the raw material. The time requried for torrefied material to go from 0% to 6.8% db, (equivalent to 90% of the equilibrium moisture content of 7.4% db) was 9 minutes.
