4P00060-06 Small-scale gasification-based fuel production

The project aims to investigate the positive synergies that can be achieved through co-location and co-generation of CHP and gasification-based small scale manufacturing of fuel. The focus is on high total efficiency (not necessarily high conversion efficiency into fuel), low investment cost and simple and robust technology solutions.
In this project, an evaluation was made of processes for catalytic production of biofuels in smaller scale, completely adapted to the power plant's conditions where focus has been to achieve high overall efficiency (not necessarily high conversion efficiency of fuels), low investment cost and simple robust technology solutions.

Simplified fuel processes have been proposed for three different fuels:
1. Synthetic natural gas (biomethane), SNG, 2. Methanol, 3. Fischer-Tropsch fuel, FT

For the different fuel processes production capacity and efficiency werw calculated for two plants, one pulp mill and one CHP. The calculations show that a fuel production in the order of 250-500 GWh / year should be possible at every facility. Maximum fuel production reached for SNG and methanol, while the FT process allows production in the lower range.

The calculations performed show that the fuel can be produced with high efficiency, despite the simplified process concepts, provided the biomass with low levels of impurities are used, for example. different fractions of fuel wood instead of bark, etc.
