4P00060-09 Hydrothermal treatment of industrial solid wastes under subcritical conditions

This project concentrates on hydrothermal treatment of industrial sludge under subcritical conditions for the production of waste-derived solid biofuels. Laboratory scale HTC experiments will be performed through design of experiments (DOE) incorporating important process variables, i.e., reaction temperature, residence time, solid load and the presence of additional catalysts, as individual design factors. Vital response variables, such as fuel properties of the attained solid, organic carbon loss to the aqueous medium, ash content and composition of the solid, and relevant energy consumption will be statistically evaluated, modelled and optimized through the use of response surface methodology (RSM). The experiments will be conducted at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Alicante, Spain, with recycled fibre sludge and mixed biosludge provided by the industrial partners.
Hydrothermal carbonization seems promising for converting sludge biomass to a solid biocoal product approaching the characteristics of low-rank natural coals, and thereby increasing potential use in energy production and providing significant ease in handling, storage and transport.
