Thermochemical pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermenting

The main focuses of the biotechnology group are projects where biotechnical methods are applied for development of new processes and products based on lignocellulosic feedstocks. Enzymes and microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, algae and fungi are used as important tools for transformation of lignocellulose and industrial residual streams into valuable products such as fuels, chemicals, materials and proteins.

The biotechnology group consists of scientists with a PhD degree in biotechnology, molecular biology or biochemistry. We can offer competences within the areas of thermochemical pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation and modification of microorganisms. We have a wide range of collaborations and contacts within industry, research institutes and academia.

The biotechnology group has access to well-equipped laboratories and also pilot equipment for thermochemical pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation at a scale of 50 to 600 litres. The pilot facilities are approved for genetically modified microorganisms.
